Arthur Agee is kicked out of St. Joseph’s and sent back to a public high school. His grades suffer, and his family life is beset by problems caused by his father Bo’s ongoing drug addiction. He has poor grades, but his public high school eventually makes it to the state playoffs. He ends up in a junior college, still determined to play in the NBA. His mother Sheila fulfills her dream of becoming a nurse’s assistant.

William’s high school career is beset by knee injuries. He has a daughter with his girlfriend. Despite the injuries, his grades and test scores are good enough to play in Division 1 NCAA basketball, and he receives a full scholarship to Marquette University. At the end of the movie, he no longer really has “hoop dreams.”
