SHORT VERSION:
John, Beth, Bob, and Brownie break into Dragonworld to free Yowler, and despite McIntyre and his guards trying to keep them from escaping, Yowler makes his first-ever flight out of the park with John and Beth riding him. The three of them return to John’s castle, but when John sees McIntyre approaching in his helicopter, he realizes that life for him and Yowler will never be the same, so he decides that Yowler must return to the Fairy Land where he will be safe. He starts to insult Yowler and says that he doesn’t want him around anymore, and Yowler – either believing his lies or understanding why he’s saying these things – sadly disappears into the mists back to the Fairy Land.

McIntyre then shows up demanding for Yowler, but he gets arrested soon after by police officers Bob and Brownie bring to the castle, after they saw a video Bob had earlier recorded of McIntyre admitting that he acquired Yowler through fraudulent means. Later on, John makes another wish at the Wishing Tree, asking for Yowler to come back so he can tell him he’s sorry.

A few years later, John and Beth are married and have a newborn son. When John takes his son outside, he spots Yowler coming up from a nearby hill, having come back to stay, and he and everyone else in the castle happily welcome him back.

LONG VERSION:
After visiting Yowler in Dragonworld and seeing how unhappy he is there, John (Sam Mackenzie) tells McIntyre (John Woodvine) that he is taking him home once the one-month contract ends. McIntyre replies that he is exercising an option to extend the contract, something that John wasn’t made aware of, which basically means that he doesn’t intend to give Yowler back at all. John curses both Beth (Brittney Powell) and her father Bob (John Calvin) for their part in his betrayal of Yowler, and he heads down to Yowler’s pen to try to speak to him, but the guards refuse to let him in and throw him out of Dragonworld. Beth comes up to him and pledges to help him get Yowler back. Meanwhile, before an agitated Yowler gets tranquilized by the guards, he breathes fire for the first time to defend himself, showing that he is past the “pup stage.”

John, Beth, and Bob confront McIntyre in his office. As Bob uses his video camera to secretly record their conversation, McIntyre reveals his plan to bring in a veterinarian to perform an operation on Yowler to remove his fire-breathing ability, which he can do because the contract also states that he has full authority over Yowler while he is in his custody. Beth also casually makes him admit that he tricked John into signing the contract and changed it without consulting him first. After McIntyre again refuses to let Yowler go, Bob punches him and knocks him out. He then ties him to his chair and takes off with John and Beth to set Yowler free.

That night, the trio – along with Brownie (Jim Dunk), who broke into Dragonworld to look for them – sneak into Yowler’s pen. They are soon spotted, but Yowler wakes up, and he motions for John and Beth to get on his back. McIntyre – who arrived moments earlier – orders his guards to shoot more tranquilizers into Yowler, but Yowler breathes fire at them to keep them at bay, and then he makes his first-ever flight out of the park and heads straight for John’s castle. Brownie and Bob then head to the former’s helicopter so they can follow them, and McIntyre summons for his own helicopter so he can do the same. In the midst of the flight, John asks Beth if she would ever consider marrying him.

The next morning, the trio arrive in the field outside the castle. A short time later, John spots Brownie’s helicopter approaching, but he also sees it being followed by McIntyre’s. Knowing that life for him and Yowler will never be the same again, John decides that Yowler must go back to the Fairy Land so he can live in peace and safety. He therefore starts insulting him, saying that he doesn’t want him around anymore, and Yowler – either believing John’s lies or understanding why he is saying these things – sadly disappears into the mists back to the Fairy Land. McIntyre then arrives and demands for Yowler, but John informs him that he is gone for good. Brownie and Bob then show up with some policemen, and one of the officers tells McIntyre that, after having seen Bob’s videotape, he was under arrest for acquiring the dragon through fraudulent means, among other charges. Later on, John makes another wish at the Wishing Tree, asking for Yowler to come back so he can tell him that he’s sorry.

A few years later, John and Beth are married and have an infant son. When John takes his son outside, he looks at a nearby hill and sees Yowler emerging from the other side, having decided to come back to stay. He calls out for Beth, Brownie, and his maid Mrs. Cosgrove (Lila Kaye), and they show up and happily welcome Yowler back.
