We come to discover that, despite the fact that Dr. Updale (Marisa Tomei) conceived the “Experiment” merely as a sociological test, so that people would purge their hate and rage and to obtain tangible data results, the New Founding Fathers of America -NFAA-, the Party in power, had political motivations to have it conducted, so that, if successful, it’d help purge the population as a whole by, basically, getting rid of the poor and powerless using anarchy and violence, thus giving the economy a boost and crunching crime down.  Chief of Staff Sabian (Patch Darragh) makes this very clear to her and later has her secretly killed due to knowing too much.

Furthermore, because not everyone was taking the experiment too seriously, preferring to party around instead, the Government had a backup plan of sending paid mercenaries to wreak havoc around Staten Island, indiscriminately killing people and inciting mayhem, to make it look to the media like the borough’s population was successfully engaging in the event.  Those who agreed to participate in the beginning were being tracked by means of drones in the air and also the very own shiny contact lenses they were asked to wear.

Meanwhile, the scary and unhinged Skeletor (Rotimi Paul) really gets into the gist of the experiment and is seen randomly killing people around.  Drug dealer Dmitri (Y’Lan Noel) kills his rival Capital A (Christian Robinson) after realizing that he send those two hookers to eliminate him and take over his business.  Dmitri comes to realize the truth behind the whole experiment -especially after the drones open fire on him and his group, killing everyone but him- and tries to get to Nya (Lex Scott Davis), to protect her and her brother Isaiah (Joivan Wade).

Eventually, Nya, Isaiah, Luisa (Lauren Luna Velez), her daughter Selina (Kristen Solis) and neighbour Dolores (Mugga) wind up barricading in Nya’s apartment, while another group of sadistic killers come upon the building, offing people indiscriminately.  Dmitri gets into the building and fends off and kills the majority of the group.  In the climax of the event, he and Nya set off a piece of explosive plastic, which explodes, killing the rest of the group and their leader.  Dmitri gets shot, but survives and so do the others sheltered in the back of the apartment.

The alarms sound, indicating the end of the experiment.  All those who survived are seen coming out, gathering and vowing that they’d fight back from then on.  The movie ends with a mid-credits clip in which Sabian announces that The Purge, “as people were calling the experiment”, was a smashing success and the Government would move to make it a yearly, nation-wide event…
