Pooper:
Inspectors Ka-Kui and Yang rescue May, kill Chaibat, and capture his wife (whose testimony will bring down the cartel).

Long Ending:
Noted Hong Kong police inspector Chan Ka-Kui (Jackie Chan) overhears his superiors discussing China’s request for a “supercop” to help them take down a drug cartel. Ka-Kui begs his superiors to be sent to China regardless of the danger (and it’s revealed the superiors made sure he overheard their conversation, knowing he would volunteer for the job so they wouldn’t feel bad about putting him in danger). Ka-Kui tells his girlfriend May (Maggie Cheung) a cover story to explain why he will be out of Hong Kong for a month.

Upon arriving in China, Ka-Kui is introduced to the mission’s head honcho, Inspector Jessica Yang (Michelle Yeoh). She is a skilled fighter and very stern. Her style compliments Ka-Kui’s own goofy and improvisational methods. They develop a plan to have Ka-Kui break a man named Panther (Wah Yuen) out of prison. Panther’s brother is the head of the crime ring, a man named Chaibat (Kenneth Tsang). After a number of set-ups orchestrated by the police to build Panther’s trust in Ka-Kui, Panther takes Ka-Kui and Yang (who is posing as Ka-Kui’s sister) to meet Chaibat.

Although Chaibat is suspicious of Panther’s new friends, he takes them along to a meeting with his drug supplier. At the conference, Chaibat orchestrates a surprise attack to kill all the other Chinese drug lords. Having effectively cornered the market on all drugs flowing into China by killing his competitors, he goes to spring his wife out of prison as she alone has the passwords to the cartel’s bank account. Once his wife is freed, Chaibat can buy all the drugs his supplier has.

Ka-Kui bumps into May, who is at the same hotel that Ka-Kui is staying at with Chaibot (May is at the hotel for work). May initially assumes Ka Kui is having an affair with Yang and angrily confronts him. The confrontation attracts the attention of Chaibat’s lead henchman, who kidnaps May and gets her to blow Yang and Ka-Kui’s cover. Rather than kill the cops, Chaibat offers to exchange May for their help in freeing his wife from prison.

Yang and Ka-Kui free Chaibat’s wife and exchange her for May. Chaibat and his wife attempt to escape on a helicopter that they will use to fly to a moving train (and then they plan to board the train from the helicopter and escape in the crowd). Ka-Kui manages to grab on to the helicopter while Yang chases them on a motorcycle.

Eventually, the cops confront Chaibat and his henchmen on the roof of the train. A fight ensues and Chaibat is killed when his own helicopter crushes him. His wife almost falls off the train, but Ka-Kui saves her. Seemingly grateful to him, the wife surrenders and agrees to spill all the information she has relating to the cartel and its bank accounts. Yang and Ka-Kui walk off victorious, arguing which of their police departments should get the spoils of their successful operation. As the credits role, outtakes are shown of Jackie Chan and Michelle Yeoh performing their own stunts.
