By the time Asterix and Obelix arrive in Africa to rescue Tragicomix and Panacea, the two lovers had already escaped into the desert, only to be captured by slavers and sold on the Roman market. Caesar orders them thrown to the lions during the circus, obliging Panacea’s request that she would rather die than be separated from Tragicomix. Asterix and Obelix encounter the same band of slavers in the desert and defeat them before heading off to Rome. While searing for Caius Fatuous, the man responsible for training gladiators, they become separated. Obelix rescues Asterix from drowning in his cell after being captured by Caius’ henchmen but is separated from Dogmatix who went off to recover Asterix’s gourd of magic potion.

Successfully locating Caius and convincing him to train to be gladiators for the circus, Asterix and Obelix easily defeat the other gladiators being trained. On the day of the circus, Asterix and Obelix win the chariot race, defeat the gladiators again, and reunite with Dogmatix delivering the magic potion just as the lions are released into the arena. Asterix throws Tragicomix the gourd which he proceeds to drink from and repel the attacking lions. Distracted by Panacea while trying to catch the lions, Obelix accidentally partially destroys the colosseum. Impressed by the show, Caesar grants them their freedom.

Back home, Obelix and Asterix are hailed for their heroics by Tragicomix and Panacea. Panacea kisses Asterix in gratitude and he is last seen sitting up in a tree looking lovesick, just as he had been in the final scene of the comic Asterix the Legionnaire.
