Teenager Aiden (Jaeden Martell) and his little sister Mia (Lia McHugh) are the real ones responsible for the strange events going on at the Lodge. They hid all the supplies and food in a hidden compartment of the house, changed the dates and times on the clocks, and hid the antipsychotic medication of their future stepmother, Grace (Riley Keough). The only thing they didn’t do on purpose is kill Grace’s dog, Grady. Mia let him outside in the freezing cold by accident, and he perished of hypothermia.

Both children resented Grace for being their father’s (Richard Armitage) new girlfriend, especially after their mother Laura (Alicia Silverstone) committed suicide. Their plan was to drive Grace insane, using their knowledge of her past in a radical Christian cult in order to gaslight her. They even pretended they were dead and trapped in purgatory, with Aiden making it look like he’d hanged himself. It all worked too well.

In the end, Grace, literally driven mad, believes herself to be dead-yet-alive as her cult leader had preached before his entire sect, save Grace, killed themselves. When Richard comes home for Christmas after being cut off from his family due to several snowstorms, Grace says he needs to repent of his sin in “fornicating” with her. He tries to take the gun from her, but she shoots and kills him. Aiden and Mia try to escape in his SUV, but the engine won’t start. She finds them, takes them inside at gunpoint, and sits them down for their last meal – their father’s corpse included.

Together, Grace and the children sing “Nearer, My God to Thee.” After that, Grace covers all of their mouths with a thick piece of duct tape, the word SIN written on it. The final shot is Richard’s pistol, aiming to kill.
