Dr. Evan Birch (Guy Pearce) did not kill Joyce Bonner (Odeya Rush). She was never murdered at all. Instead, she fell from a cliff on the opposite side of the lake in which she was found dead. Nevertheless, Dr. Birch is still guilty of having an affair with Anna (Alexandra Shipp) and cheating on his wife (Minnie Driver). The final shot of the film is of a mouse spinning on a hamster wheel, symbolizing how Dr. Birch had to keep spinning his lies.
