While Martha (Anna Kendrick) is out with Francis (Sam Rockwell) one afternoon (though she doesn’t know his name yet), she discovers that he wasn’t joking about being a hitman when she sees him kill a man sent by Richie (Anson Mount) to hire him for a job (Von [James Ransone] had pushed Richie to hire Francis himself, hoping that Francis would kill him for trying to hire him to kill someone, which would enable him to become capo of the mob. However, Richie sent this other guy in his place and ruined his plan), and Johnny Moon (Michael Eklund) – who was sent by Von to see that Francis would carry out the murder – witnesses this from a distance. Afterwards, Francis returns to Martha and quickly realizes that she saw him kill the thug, but when he tries to explain himself, she just tells him to take her back to her apartment. He does so, and she heads inside while further ignoring his pleas to hear him out. Meanwhile, Johnny meets with Richie and Von at the former’s mansion and tells them about what he saw, then says that he followed Francis back to Martha’s apartment building and got her address. Richie orders Von to get ten local thugs and head over there and wait for Francis to show up, then kill him.

Later that day, Martha is visited by Detective Patrick (Douglas M. Griffin) and FBI Agent Knox (though Knox’s real surname is Hopper [Tim Roth] and he is actually the guy who trained Francis for the CIA’s Project Ultra program and has been trying to capture him), who enlighten her and her friend Sophie (Katie Nehra) to Francis’ name and how he was once one of the world’s most notorious professional killers. He suffered a crisis of conscience two years ago and quit, and ever since, he has been killing anyone who hires him to kill someone because “murder is wrong”, and no law enforcement agency has ever been able to apprehend him. The next day, Martha chats with Hopper while he is watching her front door (Patrick is in his car on the street nearby), and she finds out that she is the only person Francis has had any kind of meaningful nonfatal interaction with. By this point, she is coming to accept that she has fallen for Francis.

Francis comes by the apartment later on and zaps Hopper unconscious with a stun gun before having Martha let him drag him inside. The confused Martha tells Francis that maybe they should take a break because of his whole “reverse hitman” M.O., but she also kisses him twice, and Sophie then appears and expresses surprise and discontentment over Francis being here and Hopper lying unconscious on the floor. Suddenly, Johnny and Von pull up outside the building with their thugs, and Patrick sees this and informs Hopper over his walkie-talkie, which Francis, Martha, and Sophie hear. Francis fills Martha in on who Hopper really is, in addition to the fact that they used to be partners until Hopper turned on him (he also had earlier told her that he blew up a building on Hopper in retaliation, but sustained multiple injuries, including brain damage [which apparently sparked – at least partially – his decision to quit contract killing]). He then gets angry when Martha mentions his name, since he doesn’t like it, and he kicks Hopper a few times because he knows he told her this. He tells Martha that they need to go, but Martha says she isn’t going with him because he is a criminal and he lied to her. However, after some discussion, Martha understands that Francis never once lied about the things he said and did, plus she thought he was joking. All the while, Sophie tries to convince Martha that she shouldn’t associate herself with Francis anymore, prompting Francis to lock her in a closet. Martha then soon states that neither he, nor any part of what she has been experiencing, is normal, to which he replies that nobody is normal, and tells her he loves her and asks her to come with him because she is all he has. She happily agrees to.

As they attempt to leave, one group of thugs attack them, but Francis defeats them all without killing them so Martha won’t get upset. However, one of the goons, Shotgun Steve (RZA), combats Francis more effectively than the others and even manages to wound him with a blast from an old shotgun he was given, and Francis shows him respect for that and also for not trying to take Martha hostage when he had a chance to, to which Steve says that that would’ve been uncool. Just then, Von and some more men approach, so Francis and Martha resume running until they are able to take cover behind a light post by the pool. Francis soon shoots and incapacitates the other goons until only Von is left, and Von soon informs him that Richie was the one who tried to hire him yesterday. Suddenly, Steve appears and beats up Francis with a baseball bat (which Francis commends him for as well), and Johnny appears out of nowhere and seizes Martha. The trio then take off with her, and Von tells Francis where his mansion is if he wants to get her back (expecting him to come and kill everyone there, specifically Richie, in order to save her while he and Johnny escape). When Francis attempts to shoot Von, Hopper shows up and whacks the gun from his hand and then kills all of the criminals that he spared, then tells him that he is coming with him. Patrick then arrives to arrest Francis, so Hopper shoots him dead, too, and this distraction enables Francis to slip away.

Von and Steve bring a bound and gagged Martha before Richie and his friend Bruce (Jaiden Kaine), and after they say that Francis will be coming here to get her, Von says that he and Johnny will put the word out on the street that Francis is coming here and offer a $100,000 reward to anyone who can kill him. Richie and Bruce both consider that to be a stupid idea, and Bruce adds that, because they don’t know where Francis is, it would be best if no one left the house and that Martha should be let go. When Richie agrees with the first part of that notion, Von accuses Richie of having no idea what he is doing, spurring Richie to beat him up. He then tells Von that the bodies are piling up and their father is going to notice it, and he blames Von for it all. He then orders Von to take Martha somewhere else before telling Bruce that he will have the mansion put on lockdown and they will hit Francis with everything they have when he arrives. Von and Johnny are next shown in a spare room with Martha, and as they argue over how they now can’t leave, Martha gets their attention and mocks them over the stupidity of their scheme. After Von smacks her a couple of times for it, she angrily says that they are royally screwed, and if Francis doesn’t kill them, she will.

Francis gets onto the grounds and faces off with Steve first, and Steve – having now developed respect for Francis as well and having come to dislike Richie and his crew – gives him all the details on who is waiting for him indoors. Francis then takes Steve’s machine gun and shoots off a few rounds to stir them all up before going in, and in parting, he wishes Steve luck in getting him. Francis jumps into Richie’s office and guns down four goons and shoots Von in the foot before taking Richie’s gun and demanding to know where Martha is. When Richie won’t tell him, Francis decides to just look for her himself and makes his way out. Von then asks him why he won’t kill Richie since he hired him, exposing his treacherous nature to his brother. Francis replies that he doesn’t do that anymore for Martha’s sake, and then departs to go look for her, after which Von fights and kills Richie himself. Francis soon runs into Steve again, but Steve decides against killing him, telling Francis that he likes him better than the others.

Francis finds and frees Martha, but as he leads her outside, he comes under attack from Hopper, so he orders her to run before he and Hopper start a long and brutal fight. Johnny soon grabs Martha and brings her inside, but when he tries to stab her with a knife, she realizes that – after multiple experiences prior to this – she possesses skills very much like Francis’. She thus uses them to evade his attacks and hit him a couple of times before bludgeoning him to death with a statuette. Von then calls his phone, and Martha answers it and tells him that Johnny is dead. While looking around the mansion for Francis, she crosses paths with Von, and she confirms that she killed Johnny before getting a hold of his gun and shooting him to death.

Meanwhile, Francis and Hopper have beaten each other up to the point where they are both laying down on the ground catching their breath, and Hopper tells him that he will never have a chance to be a normal guy due to the life he leads. Francis replies by first shooting the chain off the handcuffs Hopper put on them during the battle before telling him that that suits him just fine, and he adds that the reason he left contract killing was because he (Hopper) got boring. When Francis has his back turned to him, Hopper readies himself to shoot Francis with his revolver, but Steve suddenly appears and blows him away. Francis informs Steve that he can collect a $5 million bounty on Hopper’s corpse, and then Martha appears and tells Francis that she killed two guys. They then kiss before Francis asks Steve to take them to a hospital.

Two months later, Francis and Martha are seen in Lai Chau, Vietnam and deciding on whether to go to Thailand or Brazil, seemingly unaware that an enemy hitman is hiding a distance away. However, the hitman is surprised when Francis reveals directly to him that they know he is there, after which Martha suddenly appears in front of him with a silenced pistol and kills him.
