Moira (Elizabeth McGovern), whom the handmaid helped escape, is caught at the border and forced to work as a prostitute. The Commander (Robert Duvall) is apparently infertile. On the suggestion of his wife (Faye Dunaway), the handmaid (Miranda Richardson) has sex with chauffeur Nick (Aidan Quinn), and gets pregnant. She kills the Commander (Robert Duvall) and is helped to escape by Nick, who is secretly a member of the rebellion. The movie has no clear-cut end: she lives in a trailer in the mountains, and thinks of the daughter she lost at the beginning of the movie and who has apparently be adopted, and the civil war goes on.
