The Last Emperor
Academy Award - BEST PICTURE - 1987

Pu Yi, deposed as a child, sells out to the Japanese occupiers and becomes their puppet emperor of Manchuria.

Pu is captured by the Japanese, is "rehabilitated" in a Communist Chinese prison, and lives out his life as a gardener.

Pu survives the Cultural Revolution. He visits the Fobidden City, where he sneaks into the throne room and has a seat.
