You know going into the film that the two men were 18 & 19 of the 20 people who were pulled out of the rubble of the World Trade Center.

Two Port Authority cops are trapped and injured and awaiting rescue. In the wee hours of the morning a couple of marines hear the noise rookie Will Jimeno (Michael Pena) has been making periodically banging a pipe. The rescue effort begins.

Will and Sgt. John McCloughlin (Nicolas Cage) get pulled out of the rubble of the first tower that had collapsed and reunite with their families who are waiting for them at the hospital.

Two years later we see them at a thank-you barbecue and words on the screen tell us that they retired from the Port Authority Police and required several surgeries and rehab. John was in worse shape than Will, whose daughter ends up being named Olivia (wife Allison played by Maggie Gyllenhaal was pregnant during the ordeal).

In an interview the real Will Jimeno gave to a reporter after our screening (where Oliver Stone, Maggie G and Michael P appeared), Will said the movie was 95% accurate. He and his wife as well as the McCloughlins were consultants on the film. He also said that a 9/11 widow had told him that it was appropriate that his daughter was named Olivia because it has the word “live” in the middle of it.
