The heist is arranged as a payback after Willie Bank (Al Pacino) cheats Reuben (Elliot Gould) out of his land and partnership, causing a near-fatal heart attack. Reuben recovers after reading Basher’s (Don Cheadle’s) “love letters,” and the heist is successful.  Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia) attempts to double-cross the crew and steal the diamonds for himself, but Ocean (George Clooney) has foreseen this eventuality, tricks Benedict’s man into stealing the fake diamonds, and donates Benedict’s $76 million share of the take to a camp for foster children.

The heist costs Bank $500 million in cash, and twenty 30-carat diamonds, pretty much ensuring his financial collapse.
