Pooper:
Chon and Roy rescue Princess Pei Pei, kill Lo Fong and Van Cleef, and defeat Roy’s old criminal gang. They begin relationships – Chon with Pei Pei and Roy with Falling Leaves – and become lawmen.

Long Ending:
In the late 1800s in China, the Princess Pei Pei (Lucy Liu) is being forced into an arranged marriage. Unwilling to marry a man she doesn’t love and serve as a mere pawn of the Emperor, she asks her American tutor to smuggle her out of China to the US. Unbeknownst to Pei Pei, the tutor has ulterior motives. He is working for Lo Fong (Roger Yuan), a disgraced former imperial guard who was banished to the USA and now runs a forced labor camp of Chinese immigrants. The tutor secretly convinced Pei Pei to defect and, as they depart, the tutor leaves a ransom note. Imperial guard Chon Wang (Jackie Chan, using a name that sounds like “John Wayne”) sees them depart but does nothing after Pei Pei orders him to stand down. When he learns of the tutor’s evil plot, he asks to be sent along with three other guards to America to deliver the ransom.

After the guards arrive in the USA, they take a train to Carson City in the Old West where Lo Fong is holding Pei Pei. The train is attacked by Roy O’Bannon (Owen Wilson) and his outlaw crew. Roy has a strict no guns policy. But new gang member Wallace (Walton Goggins) is bloodthirsty and, ignoring Roy’s orders, shoots and kills Chon’s uncle (who was the emissary in charge of the mission). Chon confronts the gang, stops them from committing the robbery they planned, and ultimately gets separated from the other guardsmen in the skirmish. Due to the botched job, Wallace kicks Roy out of his own gang.

Continuing on his own, Chon is taken in by an Indian tribe after he saves the chief’s son from being killed by another tribe. After getting high on their drugs, Chon awakens to find he has been married to the Chief’s daughter Falling Leaves (Brandon Merrill). Chon later bumps into Roy at a nearby town and the two get into a fight. After hearing of the gold the guardsmen are going to exchange for Pei Pei, however, Roy agrees to help Chon get to Carson City (hoping to steal the gold himself). As the pair journey and Roy helps Chon acclimate to a western lifestyle, they genuinely become friends. Roy also develops a clear attraction to Falling Leaves. The pair’s friendship is cemented after the pair become outlaws (Chon being nicknamed “The Shanghai Kid”) and survive an attempt by evil sheriff Van Cleef (Xander Berkeley) to capture and kill them. Falling Leaves, who is extremely competent, also saves the pair’s lives on several occasions.

Although the duo briefly separate due to Chon overhearing Roy tell a prostitute that they aren’t really friends, Roy saves Chon when Lo Fong finds Chon and tries to kill him. Now truly committed to saving the princess instead of stealing the gold, Roy helps Chon devise a plan to rescue Pei Pei. The pair infiltrate the meeting place where the other guardsmen arrive to pay the ransom, and they hold Lo Fong and Van Cleef (who had been working for Lo Fong) at gunpoint. Pei Pei explains that she does not want to return to China. Instead, she’d rather remain out West where she can help the immigrants. Chon, having come to respect America’s way of life, agrees not to return her to China. As a result, the guardsmen attack Chon for disobeying orders as Roy fights Van Cleef and Lo Fong pursues Pei Pei.

Chon manages to knock out the guardsmen, defeat and kill Lo Fong, and is saved by Pei Pei when a giant church bell almost crushes him. Roy, a notoriously bad shot, miraculously manages to shoot and kill Van Cleef in a gunfight. When the guardsmen recover, they eventually relent and agree that Pei Pei can stay in America along with Chon. As they celebrate, Wallace shows up to take the gold. Chon and Roy go to confront them, only to learn the gang has already been defeated by Falling Leaves and her family. Pei Pei and Chon become a couple, and Falling Leaves kisses Roy. The film ends with Roy (who is now going by his birth name Wyatt Earp) and Chon as newly-minted lawmen taking down a crew of train robbers.
