Dr. John Boone (Shaun Symth) is the kidnapper and murderer of the young girls. Gwen, the daughter of Rayburn Swanson (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) was one of his victims. When asked why, Boone, whose daughter was killed by a drunk driver and died scared and alone in the forest, replies he targeted girls with bad parents, believing that their bad character would seep into their children making them a drain on society. Rayburn was an alcoholic so Boone took Gwen thinking like the other girls, “they wouldn’t be missed.”

Though the Sheriff, Aice Gustafson (Annabelle Wallis) tries to convince Rayburn to let her take Boone in, Rayburn decides that Boone isn’t worth the mercy. Rayburn pushes Boone into a hunting trap he had previously sealed up, leaving Boone impaled, and closes it back up, ensuring Boone will die slowly and painfully. Rayburn tells Alice they are “even” (he had covered up that she had unjustly shot him) and Alice is left to shoulder the truth of what happened.

Rayburn and his ex-wife have the funeral for Gwen, finally getting their closure. Alice listens to the radio talking about the manhunt for Boone, while secretly knowing there is no point since justice has already been done. Rayburn goes home and throws away his final bottle of alcohol, striving to do better in Gwen’s memory.
