John (Casey Affleck) is alone on the spaceship. Franks (Laurence Fishburne) and Nash (Tomer Capone) are figments of his imagination, brought upon his isolation and the side effects of the hibernation drug he has been given.

While checking the radios, he seemingly gets in contact with Zoe (Emily Beecham) who tells him he is actually in a training pod underground, and he hasn’t been in space all this time; they actually had to pretend on Earth to make sure someone could actually pull the mission off. The noises and damage to the ship are due to an Earthquake that fell into the underground bunker. Zoe tells him he needs to open the airlock and escape. Despite being warned by the hallucination of Franks not to do it, John tells him he trusts Zoe and opens the door, without a suit on.

John comes out to an underground bunker hearing Zoe call to him. However, he looks at a light with a Moth crawling on to it, and remembers Zoe mentioning that moths go to lights thinking they lead to escape but usually to their doom. In a split second, John realizes he is still hallucinating but it is too late. The film cuts back to the ship where John has opened the airlock, jettisoning himself into space, which kills him instantly. The mission is a failure, and John in his final moment is left with a deep regret; not telling Zoe how much he loved her.
