Pooper:
All of the Lomacks are killed when the fracking operation they rented their farmland to releases a deadly spore that drives them mad and eventually turns them into plants. Most of the neighboring Dolans are killed, except for Christina. She takes over the farm as she is the only family member left. The ending suggests, however, that the spores are still active and will kill more people.

Long Ending:
Two families, the Lomacks and the Dolans, are neighbors in a rural area. The Lomacks no longer farm, and Lomack patriarch George’s (Marc Blucas) automotive business is failing. George grows ever more worried as he is supporting his daughter Kim (Brooke Sorensen) who is a single mother to a toddler, and his other daughter Heather (Rachel McKeon) who is trying to go to college. The Dolans are also falling on hard times. Matriarch Kathryn (Adrienne Barbeau) is getting too old to keep their farm alive, and it is barely solvent as-is. She doesn’t trust her daughter Aubrey (Monica Wyche) and son-in-law Tom (P.J. Marshall) to run it when she dies. Kathryn is hoping to leave the farm to her granddaughter/Heather’s friend Christina (Allison McAtee), but Christina has no interest in running it (hoping to become a famous photographer instead). Christina and George are also secretly sleeping with each other.

Feeling he has no other choice, George meets with a fracking company to discuss leasing his land to them. Kathryn finds out and is horrified. She offers to buy George’s land, but he rebuffs her offer as he thinks he can get more money from the fracking company. To the Dolans’ chagrin, the company begins cracking open the land. It causes an incessant sound, shoots flame into the sky, coats their homes in dust, and contaminates their water. Unbeknownst to anyone, it also releases spores from deep within the Earth. The spores begin infecting members of each family.

Things get worse when the Lomacks receive their first check and realize the company has taken advantage of them. The company has deducted so many things (such as transportation and marketing fees) from the check that the Lomacks are no better off. Meanwhile, late at night, an infected Kathryn stumbles into the woods where she gruesomely dies as plant matter erupts from within her body.

The spores also begin causing the family to go mad. An insane Aubrey attempts to kill the Lomacks and she is killed in self defense. Kim’s small child disintegrates into plant matter and not long after, she dies in the same way Kathryn does. George tries to get a doctor, but goes mad and kills the doctor before dying himself. Tom, also maddened by the spores, attacks Christina and Heather. The two women manage to escape as Tom dies from his infection. They go to their childhood treehouse, but unfortunately, it’s revealed that Heather is also infected. The now insane Heather tries to kill Christina, but she successfully flees.

Weeks later, Christina is revealed to have inherited and run her family’s farm. She is sad and alone. Though the fracking has stopped, it’s implied that the spores are still released and active, infecting Christina’s food and the water supply.
