Anna (Naomi Watts) discovers the diary she found was from a prostitute (now dead at this point of the movie) raped by the Russian mob leader Semyon (Armin Mueller-Stahl) who by mistake she lends the diary to for translation. He discovers that her Uncle (who is also Russian) has read it and orders Nikolai (Viggo Mortensen) to kill him. The hit doesn’t go down though because Nikolai is actually an undercover agent. By the end of the film, we’re lead to believe Seymon was hit with a statutory rape charge after taking blood samples from the child and him, and that Nikolai is now in charge. Anna (who had suffered a botched abortion in the past) decides to take care of the child so it does not suffer a bad life like the Mother did.
