The film depicts life in 1979, Santa Barbara.

Single mother Dorothea (Annette Bening) is worried that she is unable to relate to her 15-year-old Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann). She asks Abbie (Greta Gerwig), an artist that rents a room in her home, and Julie (Elle Fanning), Jamie’s 17-year-old friend, to help him transition into manhood.

Abbie teaches him about punk music and feminism; Julie teaches him about women and sexuality.

In the end, Jamie reveals he was offended that his mom doesn’t trust in herself to raise him and considers their relationship fine the way it is.
