Five nuns go to a new convent in the Himalayas and last just about a year. By the time they leave, one has asked for a transfer, Sister Ruth (Kathleen Byron) has gone crazy, and Sister Clodagh (Deborah Kerr) is finding it hard to keep herself together.

Sister Ruth orders a mail order red dress, shoes and lipstick and flees down to Mr Dean’s house in the middle of a night. Mr Dean (David Farrar) tells her to get out. She returns up to the convent but has gone full on mad and tries to push Sister Clodagh off the bell platform at 6am. Not unsurprisingly, she herself falls to her death.

The last scene is of the nuns packed up and leaving in a donkey train through the valley.
