Three Australian officers are unjustly tried for murder during the Second Boer war (1900-1902) to improve the political climate for peace.

The defense attorney (Jack Thompson) is never able to prove there were unwritten orders from high up the chain of command to shoot prisoners.

During the trial the fort is attacked and the defendants are issued weapons and fight with valor, yet a plea for leniency is ignored.

Lieutenants Breaker Morant (Edward Woodward) and Peter Handcock (Bryan Brown) are finally executed.
