Breathe(2024)

Darius (Common) committed suicide. Though he designed the air filtration system in the bunker he built, he realized that it only had the ability to provide clean air for two people. Thus, he sacrificed himself so his wife Maya (Jennifer Hudson) and daughter Zora (Quvenzhané Wallis) could live.

Tess (Milla Jovovich) is NOT lying about the commune. She is however, in a sense, a fraud. She never worked with Darius; instead, she heard Zora’s broadcasts and thought she knew enough so she could reverse engineer his oxygen purifier. When Lucas (Sam Worthington) realizes she cannot do it by herself and theorizes she only came so she could stay in the bunker, Lucas kills her with a shotgun blast, intending to stay with the captive Zora, leaving the commune to their fate.

Maya, who Tess promised to come back for, is able to get back to the bunker and reunite with her daughter, turning the tables on the crazed Lucas. When they trap him in the malfunctioning bunker that is filling with hydrogen, the suicidal and spiteful Lucas causes an explosion, destroying it and killing himself.

Maya and Zora are able to make it to the commune Tess spoke of. Zora, having her father’s knowledge, is able to fix and enhance the purification system, allowing for more people to be saved. The film ends on a hopeful note, as the commune works together to rebuild the world, little by little.
