The film follows the progress of two families of different social class over the course of several decades at the turn of the 19th/20th century. Auld Lang Syne is sung several, several times throughout the movie to denote the changing year.
Family members go off to various wars, and the body count in this movie is actually quite high.
Couples fall in love and romantic entanglements ensue. One couple aboard a ship rekindles their love, only to walk away from the rail of the ship to reveal a life preserver labeled “Titanic”. (Nearer My God to Thee is playing throughout the scene, so it’s not supposed to be too subtle)
The movie ends at the opening of WWI with a montage showing preachers, a radio broadcaster, and finally the light on the top of a church shining at night while ghostly horses march overhead in the sky. “God Save the Queen” is playing in the background
