Chris (Brenton Thwaites) and his squad are not WWII soldiers.

Chris and his squad, part of the modern American military, were tasked with a CIA handler to evacuate the Helwig family, who had been helping the U.S. against ISIS. However, a group of ISIS men arrive and the CIA handler forces the men to hide and watch as the family is murdered. The handler calls in an airstrike on the ISIS men, only for Mrs. Helwig, distraught at the loss of her family, and the soldiers unwillingness to help, detonates a bomb that grievously wounds the men, her final words cursing them to relive their sins, over and over.

Dr. Engel (Billy Zane) explains that Chris and his squad were put in a WWII simulation to help them heal physically and mentally. However, Chris realizes that the Helwig family has infected the program and thus have gotten power in the real world. As things in the facility go haywire due to the haunting, Chris realizes the only way to save everyone is to go back into the simulation and properly atone for what happened to the Helwig family.

The film ends with Chris relieving the beginning of the film. However, the memories of what occurred had been erased before he was put back in; the implication being Chris and his men will be haunted and tortured, over and over, for their inaction to save the family.
