Academy Award – BEST PICTURE – 1955

Marty (Ernest Borgnine) the lonely butcher dates Clara (Betsy Blair)  the plain schoolteacher but is discouraged by his mother (Clara isn’t Italian!) and guy friends (Clara is plain) Of course none of his friends have a girlfriend.

Marty decides his feelings for Clara are more important than what anyone else thinks. The movie ends with Marty calling Clara, with the viewers understanding Marty won’t be lonely anymore!

Thanks Joy Z… who adds the following commentary:
It is a really sweet film, a love story of two plain and lonely people, and Ernest Borgnine (Best Actor Winner) is great.
Look for Frank Sutton (Gomer Pyle’s Sgt. Carter) as one of Marty’s guy friends.
