Synopsis
In the future, Mercy Court is established to put criminals on trial for 90 minutes to prove their innocence, or be executed. Detective Chris Raven (Chris Pratt) is accused of murdering his wife Nicole (Annabelle Wallis) and must convince the AI Judge Maddox (Rebecca Ferguson) that he didn’t do it. Working against Raven is his known alcoholism, which caused him to lash out against Nicole and drive her and their daughter Britt away from him. It is suspected that Raven visited Nicole while drunk and stabbed her.
Raven tries to narrow down other suspects, including a man named Burke that Nicole was secretly seeing, as well as her coworkers. Raven eventually learns that the culprit is Rob Nelson (Chris Sullivan), a friend and coworker at Nicole’s chemical company that was discovered to be stealing chemicals, so he hid in the Ravens’ home until he found an opportunity to strike. The motive was to build a bomb targeting Mercy Court and everyone inside, as Rob’s brother David Webb was the very first person convicted and executed by Mercy for a murder he did not commit. Rob kidnaps Britt and uses her as a hostage as he drives a truck with explosives toward Mercy Court.
Raven is proved innocent and freed, so he goes to confront Rob. After a fight, Raven stops from killing Rob and lets Maddox give him a trial. Raven’s partner Jaq (Kali Reis) tries to shoot Rob to silence him, but Maddox pulls up evidence proving that David was nowhere near the murder scene, and that Jaq deleted evidence that could have exonerated him, just to prove that Mercy is successful.
Jaq and Rob are taken into custody, Raven reunites with Britt, and Maddox dismisses his case.
