Pooper:
Although Godzilla kills a weakened Mothra and overcomes Japan’s Self-Defense forces, Mothra’s twin children hatch from the egg and manage to defeat Godzilla. The larvae swim off into the sunset as Ichiro, Junko, Jiro, and Prof. Miura vow to make the world a better place to thank Mothra and her devotees.

Long Ending:
A gigantic egg floats up on the shores of Japan. Two leaders of large corporations claim ownership of the egg and quickly come to an arrangement to invest funds to sell tickets to the egg’s hatching and build a theme park around the egg to bring in more revenue. A small group of people oppose the actions of the corporate bigwigs in exploiting the mysterious egg – reporter Ichiro Sakai (Akira Takarada), photographer Junko Nakanishi, and Professor Miura (Hiroshi Miura). They launch an investigation to find out more about the corporations’ plans.

As the trio investigate, they are visited by tiny twin fairies (Emi Itô and Yumi Itô). These fairies come from a nearby island called Infant Island. The island is home to the giant moth goddess named Mothra. The egg was birthed by Mothra, and was washed out to sea during a storm. Ichiro , Junko and Miura agree to help Mothra and the fairies get the egg back. They approach the corporate leaders, but are rudely rebuffed. Instead of returning the egg, they vow to keep it and also try to purchase the fairies from the trio. Realizing that their efforts to recover the lost egg is futile, the fairies and Mothra sadly retreat to Infant Island. Ichiro and Junko’s newspaper launches an unsuccessful campaign against the business endeavors relating to the egg. The newspaper editor assigns another junior reporter, Jiro Torahata (Kenji Sahara), to monitor the egg 24/7.

To everyone’s horror, the egg’s presence draws Godzilla back to Japan. The giant lizard goes on a rampage as it makes its way towards the egg. During its trek, Godzilla destroys the building with the corporations’ leaders, killing them all (although only after they turned on each other trying to escape with all the company’s money). With few options to defeat Godzilla, Ichiro, Junko, and Miura travel to Infant Island to ask Mothra for her help in fighting Godzilla. The natives (who worship Mothra) try to rebuff the trio, pointing out that the Japanese people rebuffed their request for the egg’s return. The fairies then reveal that the island was decimated by the nuclear testing in the Pacific and their once flourishing island is now only sustained by one small oasis. Despite the reticence of the natives and the fairies to assist, Mothra (who speaks telepathically with the fairies) agrees to confront Godzilla. As the trio return to Japan, the fairies explain that Mothra’s life cycle is short and that she is already approaching the end of her life, and that the egg is the key for Mothra’s legacy to live on.

Mothra arrives and confronts Godzilla. Although she initially gets the upper hand, Godzilla is finally able to hit her with his atomic breath and then further injure her with his claws when she lands. Mothra flies away to her egg and dies embracing her egg with its wing. Having defeated its nemesis, Godzilla heads to a nearby island where a group of schoolchildren are stranded. Japan’s Self-Defense Forces try to stop Godzilla using a contraption that shoots millions of volts of electricity at the lizard. Though it temporarily stops Godzilla, the fuses soon break from the strain and Godzilla destroys the contraption and takes out the military forces. The fairies use their magic and together with the prayers of the natives on Infant Island, cause the egg to fully mature. To everyone’s surprise, to moth larvae (Mothra’s children) emerge. They immediately swim after Godzilla to stop him from killing the schoolchildren.

As Godzilla fights the larvae, Ichiro, Junko, Miura, and Jiro take a ship to the island and manage to rescue the schoolchildren. The larvae successfully shoot out enough silk to wrap Godzilla in a cocoon. Incapacitated, Godzilla rolls off a cliff and into the ocean. Having defeated Godzilla, the larvae begin their swim to Infant Island. Ichiro, Junko, Miura and Jiro acknowledge that Mothra sacrificed her life (and her children fought for the Japanese), even though the Japanese mistreated them. The four vow to thank Mothra and her progeny by working towards building a more kind and just world.
