Tom (Albert Finney) is rescued from his hanging, and the charges against him are dropped.  He is revealed to be Squire Allworthy’s illegitimate nephew, (and thus his heir), and is reconciled with his uncle.

With his new title, there are no objections to his marrying Sophie, and she – forgiving him his many infidelities – agrees.
