Maddie Barker (Jennifer Lawrence) is a slacker in danger of losing her mother’s house. She finds an ad listing by a rich couple, Laird and Allison Becker, to “date” (ie, sleep with) their awkward son Percy (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) before he goes to Princeton in the fall so that he may become more extroverted. In exchange, they will provide Maddie with a Buick Regal so she can keep her job as an Uber driver.

Maddie makes a few failed attempts to seduce Percy, but begins to form a genuine friendship with him after seeing that he is a sweet-natured young man. When he starts to actually fall in love with her, even planning to skip Princeton to stay near her, both Maddie and his parents start to rethink their arrangement. While they plan to give her the car without her having to keep up the ruse, Percy accidentally overhears their conversation and becomes heartbroken. After their failed attempt to have sex, he tells Maddie he doesn’t want to see her anymore.

Maddie starts to take steps to fix up her life and begin to move out of Montauk to California. She sells her house to her friends Jim and Sara, but she tries to reconcile with Percy. After he drives his car into the beach with Maddie hanging on, they reconcile.

Percy decides to still go to Princeton, and Maddie drives him there on her way to California, along with a new dog she adopted.
