Although Paddington is reunited with his tribe and Aunt Lucy, he decides to return to Britain to live with the Brown family.
Long Ending:
Paddington the bear (voiced by Ben Whishaw) obtains his British citizenship. He still lives with the Brown family, although they aren’t as close as they used to be. Judy (Madeleine Harris) is visiting colleges, Jonathan (Samuel Joslin) stays in his room playing video games, Henry (Hugh Bonneville) is having trouble impressing his younger new boss at work, and Mrs. Bird (Julie Walters) is obsessed with completing the tasks on her to-do list. Mary (Emily Mortimer) yearns for the time when they all spent more time together. So when Paddington receives a letter to visit his Aunt Lucy (voiced by Imelda Staunton) in Peru, Mary convinces the family to journey there together.
Aunt Lucy lives at a retirement home for Peruvian bears that is run by nuns. When the Brown family arrives, they meet Reverend Mother (Olivia Colman), the head of the retirement home. Reverend Mother breaks the news that Aunt Lucy recently went missing somewhere in the Amazon. Paddington finds a note in Aunt Lucy’s room suggesting she journeyed to a place called Rumi Rock. He and the Browns resolve to search for Aunt Lucy, while Mrs. Bird stays at the retirement home in case Aunt Lucy returns. The Browns hire a ship captain named Hunter (Antonio Banderas) to take them down the Amazon to Rumi Rock. He and his daughter Gina (Carla Tous) are the only crew on the ship.
As they eat dinner, Hunter notices Paddington’s bracelet. It is his only link to his original family (as a baby, Paddington got lost in the jungle until he was found and adopted by Aunt Lucy). Hunter says that the bracelet was made by an ancient tribe that was charged with protecting the City of El Dorado. He further explains that El Dorado is a city rumored to be made out of gold that was searched for (but never found) by conquistadors. It was also thought to be hidden somewhere in Rumi Rock. It is later revealed that Hunter is descended from a family (including a conquistador) that was cursed by gold madness, which compels them to spend their entire lives futilely looking for gold. Hunter is literally haunted by the ghosts of his ancestors (all of whom are played by Antonio Banderas) who died in pursuit of El Dorado. The ghosts get Hunter to succumb to his gold madness, and he concocts a plan to use Paddington to find the city. That night, he tricks Gina (who is aware of the gold madness but doesn’t suffer from it) to become stranded offshore. However, Hunter accidentally falls overboard as well. With nobody left to pilot the ship, it smashes upon rocks, and the Browns are also stranded in the Amazon. They also become separated from Paddington.
Hunter finds Paddington and convinces Paddington to continue the journey to Rumi Rock. Gina manages to find the Browns and they go off in pursuit of Hunter and Paddington. Meanwhile, Mrs. Bird and Reverend Mother use a tracker that Reverend Mother snuck onto Mary to determine the Browns are lost and in need of help. They use an old plane Reverend Mother owns to go and rescue them.
When they arrive at Rumi Rock, Paddington realizes his bracelet can open a fake rock wall that he deduces must be the gateway to El Dorado. Hunter tries to seize the bracelet and Paddington flees from him. The Browns, Gina, Mrs. Bird and Reverend Mother arrive and mayhem ensues. Eventually, Reverend Mother reveals that she is not a nun but is actually Hunter’s long-lost cousin. She also suffers from gold madness and says that she stranded Aunt Lucy at Rumi Rock in hopes Paddington would come to rescue her and bring his bracelet (she’d seen it in a picture he sent and guessed it was the key to El Dorado). As she holds Gina hostage, Paddington helps Hunter overcome his gold madness by realizing that Gina is his real treasure. Hunter helps the Browns incapacitate Reverend Mother and rescue Gina. The Browns and Paddington then use his bracelet to enter El Dorado.
Inside, they find a tribe of bears that are, in fact, Paddington’s long-lost family, as well as Aunt Lucy (who was rescued by the tribe). The treasure inside that they protect is not gold but is actually oranges that they use to make marmalade (as every Peruvian bear loves orange marmalade). The Browns bid a tearful farewell to Paddington, assuming he will want to stay with his blood relatives. However, Paddington asks to go home with the Browns, noting that while the bears are his tribe, the Browns are his family. Everyone but Mrs. Bird (who decides to stay and help the nuns as they are now without Reverend Mother to lead them) return to Britain now spending more time together as a family. The film ends with the Peruvian Bears visiting Paddington in Britain, and Reverend Mother being sentenced by a judge to taking care of retired polar bears in the Arctic.
After the credits, Paddington and his tribe of bears visit Paddington’s former nemesis Phoenix Buchanan (Hugh Grant) in prison. Phoenix, thinking that Paddington is now wealthy since he found El Dorado, asks Paddington to produce a play for him once he’s released. He is disappointed when he learns that the treasure was in fact orangesington returns to Peru to visit his beloved Aunt Lucy, who now resides at the Home for Retired Bears. With the Brown family in tow, a thrilling adventure ensues when a mystery plunges them into an unexpected journey.
