The monsoon season causes severe damage to the Ray homestead, and Durga (Uma Das Gupta) dies of the chill she caught from playing in the rain. When Hari (Kanu Bannerjee) returns home, he decides to move his family away from the physical and emotional devastation. As they pack to leave for Benares, Apu (Subir Bannerjee) finds the hidden necklace that Durga stole. He throws it in the pond before anyone else can see it, thus preserving the good memories of his sister.
