The Black Demon(2023)

Paul (Josh Lucas) had been covering up the numerous flaws/damages the oil rig had. When he first attempted to give a genuine report, the company he worked for, Nixon Oil, threatened the financial security of Paul, who had a pregnant wife at the time. Furthermore, they made it clear that if he didn’t doctor the reports, they would ultimately find someone that would, as the profit margins were worth the ecological disaster.

When Paul discovers a bomb attached to the rig, he realizes that Nixon Oil planted it to go off during his “inspection” so he could be blamed as a scapegoat for everything that went wrong, knowing they would eventually be exposed. As his family and Chato (Julio Cesar Cedillo) escape in a makeshift raft, Paul seals a valve that causes the well to close off, stopping the oil leak. However, with time running out on the bomb and no means to get away, Paul knows he will have to let the massive shark, The Black Demon, eat him.

After making a final radio call to his family, making amends and reaffirming his love for them, Paul lets himself and the bomb be eaten by the shark. It explodes, killing them, devastating his family. A boat that heard Chato’s rescue call comes to save them, as they watch the oil rig collapse into the ocean. Before they left, Paul gave Chato evidence of Nixon Oil’s corruption, so the town can hold the company accountable for their indifference and greed.
