The Company You Keep(2012)

Short pooper:
Jim (Robert Redford) lets himself get caught by the FBI and Mimi (Julie Christie) decides to turn herself in and help clear Jim’s name. Later, Jim is released and reunited with Isabel (Jackie Evancho), and Ben (Shia LaBeouf) decides not to oust Henry (Brendan Gleeson), in favour of the safety of his adopted daughter Rebecca (Brit Marling), whom he has developed a thing for.

Longer version:
Ben, through all his aggressive research, has come to realize that Jim -whose real name is Nick Sloan-, despite the actions he has been on the run for, for so many years, could not be directly guilty of them. Against orders, he meets former cop Henry Osbourne in Michigan to do further digging of the details of the original robbery. Henry was the first cop assigned to investigate the incident. He acts evasively and refuses to disclose any information in the presence of his daughter, Rebecca.

Suspicious, Ben digs deeper and discovers Henry was actually connected to Mimi Lurie and her family, prior to the robbery, as well as the existence of the property Mimi has near the Canadian border. When Ben confronts Henry with this finding, he admits that Mimi would, indeed, be the person to help clear Jim of all wrongdoing, should she choose to turn herself in, due to the fact that he was only implicated in the whole affair because HIS CAR -without him having been physically present- was used as part of it.

Meanwhile, Jim comes forward and meets Mimi in a cabin that is part of the property; she is still unapologetic about her old actions, but he manages to make her understand that times have changed, that she should turn herself in and confirm his alibi to clear his name, and that she should do it so his young daughter Isabel does not become a victim of the same mistakes they commited 30 years prior that led them to have to give up their other daughter. At the same time Mimi reveals “her daughter is grown up, beautiful, and living in Michigan”, Ben discovers Rebecca IS THE BIOLOGICAL DAUGHTER OF JIM AND MIMI and was taken in and adopted by Henry, in exchange for Jim and Mimi hiding from the authorities and Henry’s involvement not becoming public, which would have disgraced him. Knowing this, and having come to develop feelings for her, he advises Rebecca to have a serious conversation with Henry, which she eventually does, thus learning the circumstances surrounding her adoption.

The next day, Mimi leaves the cabin and boards her boat to flee to Canada, just as Ben arrives looking for Jim. When they meet, Ben reveals he knows everything about Rebecca’s true identity and how Henry is linked to them all. Jim makes the decision to abandon the cabin and let himself be seen and caught by FBI Agent Cornelius (Terrence Howard) -who has been hot on his trail-, so Mimi is not pursued, still hoping she will do the right thing; before doing so, he recommends Ben to make the correct decision regarding Rebecca’s secret and safety.

Shortly after leaving the cabin, Jim is caught and arrested by Cornelius. Mimi has a last-minute change of heart and, shortly before reaching Canada, turns around and returns to Michigan to finally turn herself in. As a result, Jim is released the following day and reunites with Isabel. Also, in the end, Ben decides against publicly disclosing Henry’s actions, which, in turn, protects Rebecca’s identity.
