Where the Truth Lies(2005)
Submitted by Spectre
During a sexual encounter involving both Lanny Morris (Kevin Bacon) and Vince Collins (Colin Firth), Maureen (Rachel Blanchard) learns that Collins is a closeted gay man after he tries to initiate sex with Morris. Maureen tries to blackmail them both, and the following morning, is found dead, both men thinking the other killed her.
15 years later, reporter Karen O’Connor (Allison Loham) interviews both men for the truth in the process of writing a book. Collins tries to blackmail her, only for Karen to tell him by trying to do so, and avoiding discussing that fateful night, he has voided his contract and won’t get the million dollar payment. Soon after, Collins commits suicide.
After several things don’t add up, Karen is approached by Reuben (David Hayman), Morris’ fixer who offers Maureen’s tape for a million dollars. Karen realizes to her horror that Reuben had killed Maureen and made Morris and Collins think the other murdered her, destroying their professional and personal relationship. Reuben had then waited 15 years to blackmail Collins for the book money, to conceal his homosexuality. Karen refuses to pay up and Reuben leaves, his horrific plan a failure.
Karen meets with Maureen’s mother and tells her a portion of what happened that night, but says she must wait until an innocent party dies before she can tell the full truth. Karen is in fact referring to Maureen’s mother, to spare her the knowledge that her daughter’s opportunistic duplicity was part of the reason she was murdered.
