The U-96 is bombed and severely damaged on its run through the Straits of Gibraltar, sinking to 280 meters before it hits bottom.

The crew spends 15 hours making repairs before they are able to surface and return home to La Rochelle.

They have only just arrived when a British air raid strikes. Some of the crew escapes, but the U-96, left in the open, is bombed. Johann, Ullman, Hinrich, and the 2WO are all killed.

Lt. Werner arrives at the side of the Captain only to see him die as he watches his beloved U-96 sink beneath the surface.
