Martin (James Coburn) shot his daughter Penny (Virginia Madsen), mistaking her for a burglar, possibly the man who stole her purse earlier that night. 

The trip Martin took was to find his granddaughter Mia, using the gun to track her down as she was the previous owner.

He finds her in Las Vegas and tells her the truth.
