Eilis (Sairose Ronan) moves to NYC from Ireland and falls in love with a nice Italian guy named Tony (Emory Cohen). They get married in secret, but then, Ronan gets news that her older sister unexpectedly died.

She travels back to Ireland to be with her mom. While there, she meets an Irish “fella” named Jim (Domhnall Gleeson). He wants to marry her and she may be close to saying yes, when the evil Irish shopkeeper attempts to blackmail Ronan because she found out that she was secretly married (to Tony).

Ronan decides to go back to NYC and be with Tony.

Jim gets a Dear John letter.
