Fitzgerald (Klaus Kinski) finally gets the boat over the isthmus. As everyone sleeps (and before any rubber harvesting can be done), it breaks free and floats downstream. Fitzgerald is unable to stop it until it gets below the rapids, thus undoing the entire effort.
