Countess Trentham’s maid Mary (Kelly Macdonald) deduces that Lord Stockbridge’s valet Parks (Clive Owen), an abandoned illegitimate son of Sir William (Michael Gambon), stabbed him. What Parks didn’t know was that he was stabbing a corpse, because Mrs. Wilson (Helen Mirren), the perfect servant and Parks’ biological mother, had already poisoned Sir William so that Parks couldn’t be charged with murder (Mary figures this out as well). The police leave without a clue, Parks leaves without realizing that he’d met his mother, and Mrs. Wilson breaks down in the arms of her sister, Mrs. Croft (Eileen Atkins).
