The film is based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough, a Gran Turismo player who ended up becoming a real life race car driver.
Danny Moore (Orlando Bloom), an executive at Nissan, wants to create a contest where gamers can have a chance to race for real. He recruits former racer Jack Salter (David Harbour) to teach the drivers, albeit reluctantly. Jann (Archie Madekewe) is picked to join the GT Academy, where he places first and goes on to race and qualify for an FIA license. During one of his races, Jann suffers a nasty crash that claims the life of a spectator. He feels guilty and nearly quits until Jack tells him he went through the same thing and regretted quitting, so he will not allow Jann to do the same.
Jann is joined by fellow GT Academy drivers to form a team to compete at the Le Man 24 hour race. He competes against arrogant driver Nicky Capa, but after Jack helps him regain his focus, Jann catches up to Nicky and defeats him, winning the race.
The real Jann Mardenborough has competed in over 200 races and played his stunt double in this film.
