The time loop in the first film was caused by Ryan’s science experiment- an experimental reactor that when fired, fractures reality. When Tree, Carter and Ryan accidentally set off the reactor again, Tree ends up in ann alternate reality where Lori did not try to kill her, Carter is dating Tree’s arch nemesis Danielle and Tree’s deceased mother is still alive.

At first, Tree wants to stay in the alternate reality to be with her mother, but her mother tells her that if she hadn’t chosen to be with her father, Tree would’ve never been born. This convinces Tree to help Ryan fix the reactor and return to the normal world to be with Carter.

During the credits, the government arrives to talk to Tree, Carter and Ryan about rebuilding the reactor to test different realities. Carter says that someone would have to experience a time loop and Tree suggests Danielle.
