Lucky (Harry Dean Stanton in his final performance – he died before the film premiered) delivers a monologue to the patrons of the bar about the ephemeral nature of everything. When Elaine (Beth Grant) asks what a person is supposed to do if everything turns to nothing, Lucky responds, “You smile.”
The next morning, Lucky walks out into the desert, looks up at a grove of cacti, smiles at the camera, and walks away. The tortoise that we saw creep into view at the beginning of the film reappears at the end. (Howard’s tortoise?)
David Lynch appears as Howard. Tom Skerritt is a WWII Marine Veteran.
