After an authentic odyssey in their attempt to flee Iran, which included crossing a burning desert, facing a tempestuous sand storm, and even almost getting raped, Betty (Sally Field) and her little daughter Mahtob (Sheila Rosenthal) eventually make it to Ankara, Turkey.  When Betty spots the U.S. flag after descending from a bus, she exclaims, joyfully: “We are home, sweetie!  We are home!”.

Title cards inform that they both met again with their family back in Michigan in February 1986, and that Betty went on to became a member of a government organization that helps people in circumstances similar to the one she was in.
