Widowed President Andrew Shepherd (Michael Douglas) embarks on a romance with lobbyist Sydney (Annette Bening). Senator Rumson (Richard Dreyfuss) uses their relationship as an opportunity to launch a smear campaign against the President and Sydney in hopes of winning the next presidential election. Rumson’s plan backfires when the President makes a public speech denouncing Rumson and backing Sydney’s bill, which he had earlier voted down causing the two to break up. Sydney, hearing Andrew’s speech on the radio, returns to the oval office and makes up with Andrew.
