Val Kilmer’s epic performance as Jim Morrison anchors the film, despite some dramatizations and inaccuracies.

The film charts the life of Jim Morrison (Val Kilmer), from a childhood incident where he witnessed the aftermath of a car accident involving Native Americans, to forming The Doors at UCLA, meeting Pamela Courson (Meg Ryan), the infamous appearance of the band on The Ed Sullivan Show, their rise to national fame, and their collapse as Morrison’s life spirals out of control due to his drug and alcohol problems.

Jim Morrison dies in a bathtub in Paris, France on July 3,1971 at the age of 27. Pamela Courson dies on April 25,1974 of a heroin overdose, also at the age of 27.

The film is bookended by a sotted Morrison in a recording studio, reciting musings about his life until “the bottle” is empty.
