Pitman (Kirk Douglas) escapes from prison, kills off his comrades, and heads out into the desert to find the money he had stolen and hidden away.

He finds the bag of loot right where he’d left it, in a pit of rattlesnakes. He shoots the snakes and pulls the money bag out, then sees there’s still one more live rattlesnake inside the bag! The rattlesnake bites him, and Pitman dies alone in the desert.

Shortly afterward, Warden Lopeman (Henry Fonda) finds Pitman’s body and the money. Lopeman has always been honest and idealistic in the past, but this time, he decides to be selfish. He takes the money, and heads across the border to Mexico, where he will spend the rest of his life as a wealthy man.
