It was Sheriff Ben East (Stephen Elliott) who killed Carter Mastin (Richard Webb), over a gambling debt he didn’t want to pay. Even though Jim Guthrie (Dana Andrews) clears his name, he leaves the town that accused him and tried to lynch him over Carter’s murder.
