Bette (Jessica Lange), with the help of seductress Jenny Cadine (Elisabeth Shue), manages to get revenge on her family who treated her so poorly.  Bette’s one-time beau Baron Hector Hulot (Hugh Laurie) chose Bette’s sister over Bette but is now a widower. Bette hopes he will now marry her, instead he offers her a place in his household as head housekeeper.  Her niece Hortense (Hector’s daughter) steals Wencenslas, Bette’s artist protégé/potential lover,  from her and marries him.
