Jacob is a former Olympic medalist who has been reduced to traveling from town to town, wrestling against local challengers. If the challenger wins, there is a huge prize. In the small town of Santa Maria, Adriana sees this as a chance for a better life. Adriana is pregnant, and her boyfriend, Turco, is a muscular giant of a man. Adriana hopes to use the prize money for them to get married and buy a house. Everyone expects Jacob to lose, even his manager.

When they enter the ring, Jacob, the professional athlete, easily manhandles Turco. He throws Turco out of the ring. Turco lands on folding chairs and suffers severe head injury. Instead of the rosy future she hoped for, Adriana is now stuck caring for a disabled Turco.
