Writer Lytton (Jonathan Pryce) and artist Carrington (Emma Thompson) have a mostly platonic love affair (due to his homosexuality) that lasts the rest of their lives.

Eschewing traditional Victorian morality for a bohemian lifestyle (both were attached to the famous Bloomsbury group), they have a revolving door of friends, lovers, and spouses, but their enduring relationship remains.

Lytton dies of cancer at the age of 52 and Carrington commits suicide shortly thereafter.
