Sully (Felicity Jones), the commander of the Aether, is Iris Sullivan, the daughter of Lofthouse (George Clooney) and Jean Sullivan (Sophie Rundle). The mute, young girl Iris (Caoilinn Springall) is a figment of Lofthouse’s imagination. It is implied that this vision inspired him to seek out an antenna powerful enough to warn the Aether not to return to Earth.

The Aether sets course to go back to K-23, a habitable moon of Jupiter. Sully and Adewole (David Oyelowo) are the only two left onboard. Maya (Tiffany Boone) is killed during the spacewalk. Mitchell (Kyle Chandler) and Sanchez (Demian Bichir) decide to return to Earth anyway in an entry vehicle.

As the Aether moves out of communications range, Lofthouse imagines what it is like on K-23.
